Lamps: History of Light

Many references from past ages, have highlighted the fact that the lamps have been used to spread light, even before electricity was invented, and lighting has been given a new meaning. The use of lamps can be classified into two eras: the pre-electric and post-electric.

The pre-electric Era

The invention and the first use of the lamp can be dated to 70,000 BC. At that time, there had no metal or bronze to make lamps instead of civilization, and used hollow rocks and shells. These rocks have been hollow filled with foam and other natural substances and then soaked in animal fat. Animal fat acted as oil and thus the first lamps were triggered.

With the advent of pottery and bronze and copper age, humans began to make lamps that imitate natural forms. Wicks was born much later and have been used to control the flame or the burning rate. In British Columbia in the 7th century, the Greeks began to use clay lamps, which replaced the torches of pocket. The word "fire" was derived from the Greek word "damask", this which means "torch".

Change Design

There has been a major change in the design of fire in the 18th century, when the central burner been invented. With the invention of the burner, a separate fuel source was made from metal. Another small change was is the addition of a metal tube that could be adjusted to control the intensity of the flame or light.

This was a important discovery in terms of lighting, because the adjustment, humans have managed to reduce the lighting or make brilliant as required. Another aspect was added to the new lamp, which was in the form of small glass chimneys. The role of the glass chimney was to protect flame and control airflow.

Swiss chemist Ami Argand used the hollow circular wick in an oil lamp for the first time 1783.

Fuels for lighting

Different types of fuels have been used for lighting a lamp between 70,000 BC and now. Most of the early forms of fuel were beeswax, olive oil, animal fats, oil fish, sesame oil, whale oil, walnut oil, etc. They have also been among the most commonly used forms of fuel for lighting a lamp until the late 18th century.

Around 1859, the process was launched first drilling for oil and with the advent of kerosene, a petroleum derivative, the lamp has become more popular and increased utilization. Kerosene lighting was allowed introduced in Germany in 1853.

At the same time two other products were used for lighting the lamp and they were natural gas and coal. The first use of coal gas lamps was in 1784.

Lamps electric lighting
Lamps have indeed come a long way from the use of coal gas to electricity. In 1801, Sir Humphrey Davy of England invented the carbon lamp electric arc, which was the first of its kind. The working principle for this lamp is simple and included two interlocking carbon rods to a power source.

The carbon rods were kept away from each other so that electrical current may flow through the arc and then spray carbon to create white light. Around 1857, AE Becquerel of France came out with the theory of fluorescent lighting in lamps. In the years 1870, the unthinkable happened with Thomas Edison invented the first electric incandescent lamp. Since then, the incandescent lamps were used Lighting in the home until the early 20th century.

In 1901, Peter Cooper Hewitt patented his new invention, the lamp mercury vapor. This was another type of arc lamp that improved lighting using mercury vapors, which have been locked in a glass bulb. The mercury vapor lamps set the prototype for fluorescent lamps.

The neon lamp was invented by George Claude of France followed in 1911 by Irving Langmuir, an American who invented the electric incandescent lamp gas-filled in 1915. In 1927, Hans Spanner, Friedrich Meyer, and Edmund Germer patented the first fluorescent lamp. Fluorescent lamps provided better lighting as compared to vapor lamps mercury, because they were coated inside with beryllium.

Since we have been using various forms of lighting in lamps, mercury vapor, incandescent lamps and even today in some corners of the earth people still use the old wick and lamp oil for lighting their homes.
