what metals were used to make old ship anchors from about thirty years ago?
i found an old ship anchor weighs about 300# with the chain, i was going to put it in front of my restaurant but every one says it will get stolen because of the metals ,how can you tell if its brass or bronze or steel?
Hundreds of years ago, the best anchors were made of bronze. As better resources came about, wrought iron became the norm.
Thirty years ago anchors were and still are made from a variety of metals, such as galvanized steel, cast iron, manganese steel, forged steel alloy, stainless steel and many other metals.
I would think that at 300#, your anchor is more than likely iron based. If it IS brass or bronze, SELL IT and buy an iron one.
Try a magnet on it. It won’t stick to bronze or brass, (very few anchors are made of either). It won’t stick to austenitic stainless, but it will stick to martensitic stainless.
Is your anchor rusty? If so, it is made of some type of iron. If it isn’t rusty and not painted, does it look like galvanized?
The only modern anchor metal worth stealing would be stainless steel. Again, it probably isn’t bronze or brass, both a golden color when scratched fresh.
The anchor itself IS worth stealing and like was posted before, anchor your anchor or it will be aweigh……yuk yuk.
