How the Hopi create their world
"Do you hear that? I whispered to my friend Tobias.
"No, what?" He said in his breath.
"Drumming. The sound of soft, distant drums."
"No, but I see a glow, there by the cliff. As a small fire. A wave, cast flickering light against the rock wall. "
My friend Tobias and I love visiting the old Indian ruins in the desert Arizona canyons and mesas. Our favorites are the isolated, off the beaten track, is not normally visited by other people. These remains a lost civilization are quiet, dreamy and a bit sorry. Many seniors, fortresses and abandoned houses are more thousand years. These remnants of ancient life are extremely dilapidated serene and mystical. When Tobias and I sit and meditate in their eroded walls, we often a Sun, campfire fuzzy, or hear subtle, subdued, drum elusive song or the sound of children playing. Living a visual and auditory of distant past is exciting for us and serves to increase our interest in learning more about the ancients who lived in the American Southwest so long ago.
One day, while exploring a windy, arid, remote Mesa in the high desert of northern Arizona, Tobias and I came upon an Indian Anazazi partial ruin with many homes still standing. The houses were crumbling Awash relics of antiquity. Nice to find a site that had obviously not received many visitors over the years, we dropped our hands and knees and sifted dirt objects to help us understand the long-departed residents. Our efforts were rewarded with arrowheads, pottery shards and corn cobs preserved by extreme drought.
At the center of this village is a pit oval about sixty feet wide. Surrounded by a stone wall Slate carefully equipped, well the pit about five feet into the ground. This ring is surrounded by stone called a kiva by the Indians.
The structure was a ring ceremony for Indian rituals. Fascinated by the aura and power we feel in pit ceremony, Tobias and I speculated about its history. As we were sitting on stones warmed by the sun in the kiva, we were eager to know the specific nature and purpose of ancient rituals conducted by the Indian Anazazi so long ago.
The absolute calm and serenity of the kiva remember a psychological experiment I read in college. The research project has revealed a fascinating quality inherent in a vacuum. Relaxation the disturbing silence of the kiva, I related the experience to my colleagues Explorer.
Researchers have developed a vacuum in the nearby a room completely empty. Located in the vacuum chamber have been a speaker and listening device. From outside the room, one of the researchers spoke distinctly a secret word, known only to himself, through the loudspeaker in the room. The room was then locked and sealed for five years. At the end of five years, scientists have returned. From outside the room, they turned on the sound sophisticated detection equipment to listen to whatever they could hear inside the room. The device picked up the secret word spoken in a vacuum five years earlier! The sound vibrations of the floor was still alive and detectable in this environment, after five years.
The kiva was almost as still and empty as I imagined a vacuum to be. It was the kind of calm that absorbs all sound. Even the intermittent sound of the wind was consumed by the all-prevailing silence.
Seated in this timeless place, we have allowed peace to envelop us. I felt space around us had been calm for the past thousand years. Then the idea came to me. Was it possible that everything happened in the kiva a millennium ago still exists on some subtle level of vibration, like the sound of speech in the vacuum of scientists? And as the word is available and that the vibrations felt today?
What an exciting concept! I turned to Tobias share my proposal, "Maybe we could contact whatever occurred in this kiva long ago. Perhaps even hear part of a ceremony."
Tobias took my enthusiasm. Blond, blue-eyed and innocent, Tobias was curious adventure of his ancestors Vikings. He was as anxious as me to see if such a feat was possible. We were flush with excitement. We were on a mission to connect with kindred spirits that we had preceded on the planet!
We decided to sit quietly inside the circle and open ourselves to the detection vibration remains of past activities in the kiva. The most we were expecting something along the lines of what we had known before poor vision, a mumbling vague, or, if appearance extremely lucky, a blurry, dreamlike.
After about half an hour, none of us had gathered all his or observation. Then suddenly, to our right sat a Native American Indian-in the flesh! I tentatively reached over to touch lightly to ensure it was real. I was surprised by my discovery. "Yes, I nodded to Toby," the man is a solid, physical human. It is not a ghost! "
The stoic Indian sat cross-legged on the bare ground. One hundred lines shaped canyon carved his noble face of bronze. He looked old and very sweet and gentle. His eyes were gentle, calm smile, were so penetrating, I kept not to lose myself in his calm, accepting eyes.
A respectful silence engulfed three of us for a very long time. Finally the elder Indian smiled and said: "You want to know why we have used the ceremonial circle. Is that true? "
We not expect a guide to life and eagerly nodded his head up and down to indicate "yes", a thousand times yes! "He shook his head, took a long breath and silence began our lesson in creating abundance:
"Many, many moons ago, when the antelope ran free, the buffalo grazing in the country, and my brothers and sisters lived in harmony with each other and Mother Earth, we meet in circle every fall for the ceremony the most important all year. This sacred, essential ritual was attended by the head of the tribe, the medicine man, tribal elders and all those who had obtained the status of a brave hunters of the tribe. After several days of purification through singing, drumming and prayers in our sweats, we sat around the circle in silence and waited for the Great Spirit has honored us with a vision.
Then, one by one, each brave would see and feel the specific animals they kill and bring to the village as food for the tribe in the coming year. mind each animal has an agreement with the warrior who would be to kill the animal. For a period of time, their spirits are common in the beauty and harmony their common intention. In this way, time-honored, the warrior connect with each bison, antelope and deer that would provide tribe. When his vision was complete, the brave announced for the rest of the group what he had seen and experienced. "
At this point, the Indian took a full breath and said very deliberately:
"And that day, the food supply any year for the tribe has been created. "
We watched closely to see if we have heard his last statement. Satisfied He continued:
"Every warrior waited until he saw, hosted and came to a mutual understanding with the mind each buffalo, antelope and deer before announcing the circle, "I will bring as many buffalo, antelope and deer to the tribe in the year to come. "And so it went until, one by one, each brave met the spirit of each animal that it would be killed in the following year. One by one, each warrior announced the food they provide to the tribe in the coming year. "
Again, the venerable, dilapidated storyteller break. With passion, he looked directly into mine our eyes first, then Tobias. I never felt such a piercing look. His gaze penetrated the depths of my soul. Famously, he looks in his lungs. Repetition his message, he said:
"And that day, the food supply throughout the year for the tribe has been created. "
Once again, he waited until he felt that the import of his words has been fully absorbed before continuing:
"After all the good food they had proclaimed to make the coming year, the man Chief of Medicine, and former bless the ceremony. All leave the kiva knowing that this day, the food supply all year the tribe has been created. "
Again, he waited to see if we were fully digest his last sentence before speaking again. He continued on a very emphatic:
"In winter, when the warriors could not go hunting because it was a storm Snow accumulations of snow with twenty feet high, the man is head of medicine, the elderly and the brave would meet again in the kiva and wait in silence, meditation pregnant. Soon, the windswept prairie and mountain plateaus would a buffalo, a deer or antelope. By itself, the animal finds its place in the tribal camp, then in the circle kiva. The creature in the center circle until he recognized the good with which it concluded agreement wit. Then the animal was walking on the warrior, stand in front of him, and quietly let himself be killed in a very Quick and painless. The creature gave way to the brave, as agreed earlier in the kiva, so that the people would have food during the harsh winter months. Indeed, on this special day last fall, the food supply all year for the tribe has been created. "
It was not until the Indians told us about the animals entering the ring in winter and recognizing the warriors with which they had an agreement that Tobias and I finally understood what the Indian told us. And just when we point to history, old man disappeared before our eyes. Do not believe our vision, we scanned the kiva quickly, thinking it must have been an artist escape quickly. It was thirty feet from the edge of the circle and none of us saw him leave. He disappeared the second we have understood the message!
Driving back to Phoenix more Later that day, Tobias and I discussed our shared long meeting. We agreed to the Indian was telling us something much more important than how the Hopi used to create food for a year. He was opening a door for us understand how the creation itself works.
Tobias and the message I received in the kiva was simple but profound: the power to create lies in this, not in the future. Creation is happening now, when said with strength, heart and intention. Then, what is created in this unfolds in the future time and space according to our agreements with the other creatures of Mother Earth.
