Lamps time with Pearly Gloss
Pottery is a survivor! If there is one thing that is on an archaeological dig, its pottery. While wood, fabric and other materials that have long since disappeared, perhaps not a complete boat, maybe just pottery, but generally sufficient to make a precise dating. These specimens have survived are very often pre-history, which clearly demonstrates the use of humanity early clay and water!
There are several types of pottery and ceramics with a long forgotten story and he is a man like that discussed here …
Lustre wares, luster or pottery is one of the earliest forms decorative ceramic known and recognized as coming from the East East. Glossy debut in Baghdad and Samarra to the ninth century AD. At that time, Baghdad was the largest city in the world and center of the great Abbasid Arab Empire. Baghdad was the seat of learning with many universities where medical, mathematics, astrology and science were taught.
The arts have flourished at the stop Caliphs who were great admirers and collectors of Chinese Tang dynasty porcelain. Porcelain was imported from China via trade caravans traveling along the Silk Road.
It is always difficult to establish the accuracy of the information of the 9th and 10th centuries, but there are stories that tell the persistence Kidnapped Chinese potters in the centers of ceramic and taken to Baghdad. These "prisoners pottery" were put to work pending porcelain being produced.
Without very specific clays and kaolin for production of porcelain available, Chinese potters had unfortunate to improvise with available clays and subsequently developed white enamels in an attempt to imitate the appearance of the porcelain.
Person No one really knows, either by accident or by experiment, but the Chinese potters applied glassmaking techniques, technical so old that their origins date back in Egypt of the pharaohs.
It would be interesting to know just how and why the ninth century Chinese potter, far from the house, chosen to decorate the pots Baghdad with metallic pigments, but they did and, therefore, pottery glaze was born!
Lustre ware produced an almost instantaneous reaction with Iridescent golden glaze. Initially, it was considered alchemy, because the process involves the use of a lead-based glaze to create a piece of gold on a pot but no gold in it!
The sheen of gasoline is course in the most varnishes, enamels containing lead, copper, silver or even gold. After baking powder, metallic pigments produced the more brilliant iridescent ever seen on a ceramic body. Copper led a bright red, silver can lead to a rise of a burst quicksilver, or sometimes gold. The range of glaze colors is wide, pink, purple, canary yellow luster and moonlight, to name just a few of the incredible variety.
The result was completely blind, relying totally on the shooting conditions of the furnace with the result being unpredictable.
Technically, the goods need three luster firings: – the first fire, or hardening of the clay, the second fire, or set the glaze plain and, finally, the third firing. This is the third time in the oven that produces the result luster.
Form of the pottery was decorated in accordance with Islamic culture, with a pattern, like flowers and foliage, or geometric or stylized decor. The decor now painted with the selected project, containing the metal compound suspended.
The third major fire is the lowest temperature of the three shots. At this critical period, the oven is "private" oxygen with the metal compound chemically "reduced" the base metal in suspension. The results have been and still are not always as expected!
Lustre ware has a high failure rate, since the brightest examples are preserved. It is not usual, even for two examples from a shot to look exactly the same – such is the unpredictability result.
From Baghdad to the technique spread to Syria and Egypt where the process became more refined, with examples from the 12th century still admired for their beauty. With the Arab influence in southern Spain, brightness conservation has been adopted as a ceramic art Spanish, as it was in the 15th century in Italy.
Lustre Ware has not been found again in England until the early 19th century when it was popularized by Spode and Wedgwood with many other widely recognized names such as Wedgwood and famous chandelier Sunderland 20. Fairy Land century chandelier.
The chandelier lights shown are examples made during the first half of the 20th century and were produced by Thomas of Bavaria in the -1930 period1920.
The company history starts in 1898 with the opening of the first porcelain factory in the Bavarian town of Marktredwitz and known as "Porzellanfabrik Jaeger-Thomas & Co". Thomas had, what we would call today "Management problems". It Jaeger and had constant disputes, often ending by shouting and arguments. So in 1903, Thomas decided to create its own factory.
In recent months prior to departure, he had secret talks with another prospective partner, Ens. Thomas took things slowly, not wanting not to repeat his story Jaeger. Thomas was very pleased that Set was not interested in the functioning of the company, or in the direction artistic, but would only be an investor that led to the birth of Thomas "Porzellanfabrik & Ens" 1903.
The new partnership was an immediate success and Thomas have all the freedom of artistic expression, he imagined. Thomas has been so successful that he soon attracted the attention society much larger Rosenthal.
By 1908, Ens decided to look elsewhere for investment and informed Thomas that withdrew its interest. That's what Rosenthal had waited and quickly made a gesture, becoming a major shareholder in 1908. This left Thomas as a subsidiary Rosenthal independent until 1960. The company continued to own the trademark rights and Thomas until 2004 when the mark has been dropped.
