Any good tips on painting sponge and good color combo to use?

Never tried before, I'll be brave and do my kitchen anyone has suggestions on what colors to use? I think I just want to make a base layer and a color on top. I always had a penchant the yellow and thought perhaps a blue or gray. can not decide. Do you also mix in a glaze?
