Does porcelain become soft again after re-firing?
I’m trying to create sharp corners on one of my cups. My manufacturer says the glaze will collect in the corners and make it less sharp. I suggested he fire it upside down so the glaze runs the other way and therefore won’t collect in the corners. He said the firing makes the porcelain soft. I haven’t heard this before. Is that true? Thanks.
yes, it actually can. Clay can melt into a lump in your kiln if you fire at a temperature which is too high for that clay. If you ever used kiln sitters or pyrometric cones you should know that. They are based on that different clays get soft at different temperatures. So at the right temperature for sintering the clay is actually somewhat flexible. If for example you have a sculpture of a person with the arms extended to the side the arms would sag a little downwards during firing. It’s not a lot, but it can be enough to warp a shape.
The problem with firing a cup upside down with a glaze is more that kiln stilts are likely to leave a mark, and you would have to support your cup with them in visible places. Depending on the shape of your cup sagging might not be much of a problem.
