if i paint–not glaze– a vase after its fired, what could i put over the top of it to make it shiny?
the glazes at our schools that are in the color family i was hoping for are designed to have a streaky look to them. so anyway, i was going to paint it a dark brown. but that would have a horrible matte-look to it. and i really want them to be shiny.
any advice as to what i could put over the top?
Sure … just use a varnish in a shiny finish.
If your vase is just going to be for decoration, you can paint it with acrylic paint … either craft paint or artists’ acrylic (craft paint is cheaper!) and then seal it with a gloss varnish.
You can buy it at a hardware store or Wal*Mart (Polycrylic is one brand I can think of … it’s located with paint and wood-stain) OR you can use a product like Delta Ceramcoat Indoor/Outdoor Varnish (buy it at a craft store) … both of these products are available in matte, satin, semi-gloss, and high-gloss finishes.
Keep in mind that if you finish your project with a varnish, rather than having the gloss-glaze actually fired into the piece, you’ll have to be a bit more careful with it … it can’t go into the dishwasher, for example, and the paint under the varnish may fade over time if it is exposed to bright sunlight. Ceramic glazing is an ultra-durable finish … the finish on your project might need to be reapplied after a few years if it shows wear. But Good Luck with your project!
