Spring Festival! (Nee Gwuh in Haow!) Good fortune, health and prosperity to each of you throughout the year pig. On the Chinese calendar, 2007 is Lunar Year 4704-4705 and the festivities of New Year begins February 18.
Spring Festival also known as Chinese New Year is the biggest holiday in China. He wears the same, if not more, important as Christmas does in western countries. Traditional Spring Festival is synonymous with happiness and good fortune, for more than 15 days, special foods and activities contribute to the cost of living memories. fairs temple, the dragon and lion dances, fireworks sound equal to a war zone and proportions of light, walking on stilts, lantern carnivals and acrobatic shows are everywhere. Photos of the god of doors and wealth, Chinese calligraphy with black characters on red paper, and bright red paper cuttings decorate households and add to the atmosphere of good humor.
The celebration of the Spring Festival, perhaps the most delicious dinner of the year. Dishes such as chicken, fish and tofu are the favorites, their homophones, respectively jee, and foo yiew doh means good fortune, abundance and prosperity. Jee-zih AOW (Chinese dumplings), born-gaow (New Year cake) and tahng yiew-in (a kind of tower dumpling of glutinous rice flour and sweet stuffing served in soup) are also special foods of the season.
After dinner, families play cards or board games, or watching television programs highlighting the holiday. The New Year's Day itself, the ancient custom of Hong Baow (meaning red packet) takes place. Children and unmarried adults are given red envelopes of money, which symbolizes luck and wealth. After Hong Baow, families say greetings from door to door, first to their parents then to their neighbors. As the West: Is forget the past, during the Chinese New Year, grudges are put aside.
The end of the new year is marked by the Lantern Festival, which is a party with songs, dances, lantern shows, and yes, more fireworks. Traditionally, Parents prepared Chinese lanterns for their children wear to school during the early days of the new year. This symbolized the hope that children have a bright future. Another tradition is interesting is the posting of guessing lantern riddles called. They are written on slips paper and posted on lanterns or walls, and anyone solve the puzzle was awarded a prize.
