Tools for Practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture is undoubtedly the most common tool that practitioners of TCM use. It is best explained as the insertion of hair thin needles into specific locations on the body called acupuncture points. Acupuncture has the unique ability to regulate body systems that are out of balance (ie disease). For example, if your immune system is too low, the correct acupuncture to strengthen it, if your blood pressure is too high, acupuncture may reduce. In other words, acupuncture gives the body a boost "physiological" in the right direction.

Chinese herbal medicine has long and rich history that goes back further than acupuncture. The Materia Medica (the Bible Chinese medicine herbal, if you) is full of information thousands of roots, plants, flowers, barks, minerals and animal products, each possessing unique medicinal properties. Medicine Chinese herbal is considered by most traditionalists to be the tool most important and useful to the practitioner of TCM.

Tuina (twee-na) is the TCM massage. Tuina is most appropriate for issues such as musculo-skeletal pain, but can also be used for questions such as digestive and menstrual problems with great success.

Stamping or "fire" cupping uses round glass cups that are placed on the body. The term "light" is used because a small controlled flame is rapidly inserted into the glass, burn the oxygen in the cups, this which creates a vacuum in the mini cup which, after placed on the skin (usually behind) gently pulls the skin and muscle tissue in cup. This is very effective in reducing pain and chronic muscle pain.

Moxibustion is the burning of a Chinese herb, Artemisia called on or around acupuncture points. Moxibustion, or moxa, is generally used when a person experiences a "cold" pain as knee pain is worse in cold weather.

Other modalities of TCM are Gua Sha (scraping the skin soft technical), nutrition therapy and recommendations of the year.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first visit to a TCM practitioner must be at least an hour and could go an hour and a half long. A complete history of health is taken during this time, noting recent illness, medicines and problems related to your family history.

When you see a TCM practitioner, you will be asked a number of issues that are important for the TCM practitioner to know and help them decide which acupuncture points to use and prescribe herbs. Finally a true practitioner TCM always take your pulse (wrist) and inspect your language. Much time is spent learning in colleges both TCM important diagnostic tools. TCM believes that there are 28 different types of pulses, each indicating a certain imbalance in the body. The size, shape, coating and the surface of the tongue also contains a wealth of information that helps us further refine diagnosis. Follow-up visits can be anywhere from 30min to an hour depending on disease process. Typically, this can take 6 to 10 treatments to see a change in your state, at least if the problem has been around for a short period time (weeks) and more if it has been for months or years.

Formation of a TCM practitioner in Ontario

This is where things get confusing for the audience, but fortunately, the province responded by passing Bill 50 in December 2006 and a regulatory college acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine for Ontario is currently being formed. That being said, many people still practice acupuncture with very little training and it is (for now) to the public to determine whether the acupuncturist is qualified to provide the care they need. Your best bet is to go to a person with specific training TCM (at least four years) from a recognized college to receive the best TCM possible treatment outcomes.

The scientific community recognizes that acupuncture is useful pain management and there are many articles on this subject in medical journals worldwide. However, the general public only recently learned all other common conditions that acupuncture is effective to treat.
