Coral Snuff

Snuff Bottles Antique Chinese – heavy stone is really flying!

When collecting antique Chinese snuff boxes, you can choose to collect the glass, porcelain, bottles from organic materials (such as amber or coral), or perhaps the inside painted bottles, but it is sure to be a time when we decide on the collection, or at least add a few bottles of hard stones.

Hardstone bottles can be found in a variety of materials such as jade, quartz, chalcedony, crystal hair, tourmaline and many more. There are wonderful shapes and colors located and even some stone bottles have pictures or photos, formed from natural inclusions that are in the rock.

When catalogs Sales will now consider a then meet in the description of antique stone bottles, although the comment "dug" as during the review bottles with a dealer that term is also used. When this comment is missed note, like all good antique stone bottles should be "Dug well and if they do not believe they are wrong!

Antique Chinese snuff boxes were made to be used and had be well dug, to take snuff enough, which raises the question of how well dug "well dug? Most of the good bottles old are considered to be well dug if the bottle will hold a lot of snuff and does not feel too heavy. Remember, as a guide, they are often worn in the sleeve. But the most precious stone best skylights are unusually widened to the point, they often consider they blew it up (like glass). These are called "thin shell" or "floating" because even if they were engraved on a rock, they are so well dug, they float in water!

These stone bottles are examples of extraordinary skill, because All excavation was done through a tiny hole in the neck of the bottle. Even areas that we call the shoulders of the bottle (this are the areas most difficult to dig), have to be very thin, for the bottle to trap enough air to float.

There are some jade bottles that float great, but jade is one of the hardest stone to carve, not only is it an exceptionally hard material but also some weak points where it is easily broken.

After showing a couple of bottles (one well hollowed the other not) lapidary workers, equipped of all the most modern cutting and drilling tools, whether they could change the bottle badly dug and dug into one that would cost. No one has the task and the general opinion was that, even if they tried, the cost would be significant because of the weather they would, but no one accept the risk involved, possibly ruining the bottle in the process!

The explanation of how these antique stone bottles were originally carved and hollowed out so well, were all down years of experience and the slow work love, where the sculptor has done all by hand without a second thought about how long it took.
