10 Tips for Breaking a colt and Playback
When I started writing my tips for breaking a young horse, I thought I must be crazy, what do I know? There are plenty of experts out there all offering advice and I was just a humble owner horses, not a trainer etc. Then I decided that if my story helps anyone to have the confidence to work with their own horse, then I think they will find it a rewarding experience and it will benefit both the horse or pony and themselves.
Backing, Breaking and Training a young horse. Well its something that tells us is best left to experts and to some extent I agree, you can do much damage to a horse at such a young age, but with the support and information, I think you can do a good job.
This is easy to say leave to the experts, but for most of us our horses and ponies are part of our family. We are the sound that are with them every day and that who have built mutual trust and a relationship with them.
I took a break to have my own horse for about 15 years. Then I found myself, in my naivete, be the proud owner of a 2 year old filly. I fell in love with her, I can say, but it was 16.1hh and very powerful. Much could have gone wrong. I contemplate the return, in time, having broken his professionals, supported and educated. There were several problems with this idea well. Number one was the cost, I just did not have the money to do the courses I had reached were exorbitant. Number two was this was my horse, I spent hours and hours in the stable with her, bonding, grooming and just sat then gain his trust. I did not want to return it and lose it all. I knew she trusted me, she would follow me around the paddock like a dog, if I ran She trotted after me. Pretty scary when you have a 16.1hh thoroughbred chasing you. I had never read a book through natural horsemanship, but I realized that this was what we were doing.
I also discovered that she had never been away from the court, canned, rushed or had a bit anywhere near it. I thought it would be a lengthy process.
In reality, I could not have been worse. Although I do take things very slowly I found it very straight forward support.
I used a lot of sense, applied loads in the opinion of local tack shops and people of the court, and read as much information as I could find, including all the other tips on breaking a young horse. Many of the techniques and equipment has evolved from the time I had my last horse. So I had to learn what to do with it again.
The things I learned and my 10 tips to tame a young horse are:
1. / Spend time bonding with your horse or pony, do not rush into the break. You'll need time to build confidence mutual.
2. / Learn your moods horses. Read their normal behavior and collect when something goes wrong.
3. / Take time before you try to save your horse is used for basic commands, both on the lunge and long rein. Stand, walk, trot will be invaluable once your horse is first argued.
4. / Insert the little slowly – Do not expect to put in the mouths of horses and leave it there for hours. Try a few minutes at a time over several weeks and have hardly fitting for a young horse. I used some copper key.
5. / Put the saddle without girth, stirrups and leathers to begin, and remove it again after a few minutes.
6. / Before even think of putting someone back on your horses get the horse used to carry the saddle and bridle on the lunge or hand.
7. / When the first cracks in time to tack the stirrups and leathers are not close to beating and spooking your horse.
8. / If you introduce someone on their back so that you the person who speaks to your horse, after all, you're the one that builds trust.
9. / Try to get light to somebody to be the person who is first on your horse. Start with them just lying on your horse and then gradually the meeting. Make sure each slow movement of the rider is a fluid. Again make sure it is not rushed and done over the weeks.
10. / Build your horse or pony slowly take the head of the animal. If they are looking for stress or anxiety or misconduct are really off. There is usually a reason.
It took me about 2.5 months back my horse from only ever having a head collar on piracy gentle with me on it.
I introduced gradually while talking incessantly. It may seem a long time for some people, but I was left with a horse properly adjusted, that is not stressed or act very often. She takes over from me and will try new things because I firmly believe that she has confidence in me.
Doing that you are safe at all times and that someone is with you if necessary which is the most competent, but do not be afraid and take the lead.
There is no excuse when horse breaking to be cruel, and remember animals including horses are not born bad, they react to what we humans do to them.
