Translation of Tibetan song “Vakritunda” on CD “Selwa” Choying Drolma and Steve Tibbetts?
The liner notes (or whatever they call them on CDs) provide translations for many of the songs, but not the provocative “VAkritunda”. Does anyone know where it comes from? Or what they are saying? It is haunting……Choying Drolma and the nuns of Nagi Gompa, a Buddhist nunnery in the foothills of the Himalayas, sing songs that have been passed down in an unbroken living tradition for hundreds of years. In 1994, guitarist Steve Tibbetts visited their remote monastery and recorded their music, which he later framed with elegant and restrained arrangements to create a stunning recording called Chö, released on Ryko/Hannibal Records
I don’t understand all the words, but I got this much out of it:
“Om namo shree gajanana”
This is a phrase of praise of Ganesha. Gaja means Elephant, and Gajanana is a name for Ganesha.
Om is the sacred syllable. Namo = name. Shree is like an honorific word I think in this context.
I also hear the word Siddhivinayaka in the song, and that is another name for Ganesha. In fact, Vakratunda is a nmae for Ganesha.
Sorry, but that’s all I was able to pick up that I understood. Nice song though.
