Coma – Signs and Symptoms of Coma
A coma can be difficult to understand, especially because people sometimes jokingly use the coma and coma words (eg: ko-muh-tohss), which means in a coma or coma-like state) to describe people who are not paying attention or who are drowsy or sleeping. But coma is a serious condition that has nothing to do with sleep.
Coma is a state of unconsciousness in which a patient can not react with the surrounding environment. The patient can not be aroused by physical stimulation or auditory outside. The inability to differentiate rouse coma sleep. Patients may have different levels of unconsciousness and insensitivity by the quantity or the little brain works.
Coma is a simplistic term for an altered state of consciousness in which the victim does not respond to verbal or physical attempts to wake him. Any State Sudden coma is a medical emergency and rescue personnel should call 911 immediately.
Signs and Symptoms of Coma
The main symptom of a coma is the inability to be awakened to consciousness. Other symptoms include lack of awareness, lack of sleep-wake cycle, Lack of purposeful movements, absence of pain and impaired breathing.
Stupor: Someone into a stupor is not responding but may be raised briefly – for example, by a sharp pain.
Locked-in syndrome: People in this state are aware and awake, but can not move or speak due to complete paralysis of their bodies.
People with myxedema coma are in or near coma and can not function normally. They need emergency care.
Various types of bumps, ulcers, or, more rarely, flat areas of discolored skin, that appear mostly near your nose, eyes, back, arms, legs, and scalp. They are usually itching, but not painful. They usually last long.
A person may also lose the gag reflex, fail to meet noxious stimuli (odors), and unresponsive to pain.
Causes of Coma
A coma caused by diabetes is relatively rare provided care and monitoring the state of being followed. However, it is important to understand how a diabetic coma can occur, what are the symptoms to monitor and general guidelines to ensure that it does not.
The presence of certain substances that disrupt the neurons. Drugs or alcohol in toxic quantities can result in neuronal dysfunction, as can substances normally found in the body, but that due to some disease state, which accumulate to toxic levels. Accumulated substances that might cause coma include ammonia due to liver disease, ketones due to uncontrolled diabetes, or carbon dioxide because of a severe asthma attack.
Coma can be caused by a variety things. The most common cause of coma is severe head injury. Other causes are: consumption of a large quantity of alcohol (coma toxic or metabolic), diabetes, morphine, shock or hemorrhage.
Coma is caused by a number of physiological disturbances that disrupt normal brain function. A common cause of coma is traumatic brain injury. Brain injury can damage parts of the brain controlling consciousness. Two ways with brain damage can result in coma are focal and diffuse axonal injury.
A head injury or certain diseases or serious complications can lead to coma. The most common causes of coma include: severe head injury seizures metabolic disorders, such as low tumors or high blood sugar or other structural lesions leading to high pressure in the skull Bleeding in the brain alcohol or drug intoxication.
Other causes of stupor or coma including the abrupt cessation of heart pumping (cardiac arrest), aneurysms, severe pulmonary disorders, inhalation of carbon monoxide, stroke, seizures, thyroid gland (hypothyroidism), liver or kidney failure and a low or high body temperature (hypothermia or hyperthermia).
