can silver caps be replaced with porcelain?
I have read about tons of parents, like me, who were bullied into silver caps by dentists when their kids had to have nerve treatment. The lady never told me there were such things as porcelain so that my little 2 year old wouldn’t feel self-concious and different from other kids as she entered school in the future.
My question is that can the silver caps be replaced with porcelain veneers of some sort?
the reason why stainless steel crowns (SSC) are used to treat children is because you cannot reduce enamel and dentin properly to accept the thickness required by a porcelain crown without harming the baby teeth. baby teeth have relatively thin enamel and dentin and have large pulps. because SSC’s are thin yet strong enough, they are the material of choice. however, ask your dentist about the possibility/availability of putting in tooth-colored plastic crown for front teeth.
