Kung Fu training in Shaolin Temple
Kung Fu training in Shaolin Temple
Tom Carter
"Let's see your Tiger-Crane style match my Eagle's Claw! "
Ah, the immortal words of dueling Shaolin warriors. Though dialog like this is mainly the stuff of low-budget Hong Kong movies, it is actually a place where such challenges are still out. No to death, of course, but between students at Shaolin If China's most famous Kung Fu temple.
Situated atop the crest of Western sacred music Shan mountains in northern province Henan Shaolin If 800 years has been destroyed and rebuilt time and again, weathering attacks by emperors, warlords, revolutions cultural, and now his most recurrent invaders – the modern tour group.
In fact, it is only the advent of the craze 1970s Kung Fu movie and the popular 1982 film "Shaolin Temple" has made a leap annual tourism CGI-clone 200000-2000000, prompting the Chinese government to list the temple as a protected heritage site.
But while the venerable temple gates see an almost endless stream tourists who want a glimpse of a Shaolin monk in real life and a performance demonstration, a more permanent residence Fan Kung Fu exists in the surrounding hills.
They are the son and daughters of Shaolin, young students who have abandoned the secular life for a system strict and abandoned traditional programs for fitness. At Shaolin If the sword is really stronger than the pen.
Crouching Tigers
Kung Fu (Gungfu in Mandarin) was originally a Chan Buddhist practice with the dual purpose of purifying the soul and strength-building through Zen spiritual doctrine and martial arts.
Shaolin priests complimented their monastic ways by leveraging the strength of their life to meditation and to release this energy, or Qi, through practical offense and defense maneuvers, the traditionalists complain has been diluted something in the centuries for the thrill of competition and the vanity of exhibition.
The opening to the outside of the temple began in the mid-16th century, when military officers of the Ming Dynasty court attended Shaolin monks to study the unique combat techniques. Resultingly, Kung Fu schools today have become big business.
The oldest and perhaps most visible school, the Institute of Wushu to Tagou, is at the entrance of Shaolin If himself. A mountain may have more space for two tigers, says the old Chinese proverb, but the management private Tagou over ten thousand! The court is at a given moment a swarm of killer bees for students of all ages deftly demonstrating the fluidity movement of forms, gravity-defying aerial attacks, an arsenal of weapons techniques and the brute force of striking and grappling.
As it does not seem likely that the People's Republic will need for the future use martial monks to defend the country against Raiders Wokou as in the old time, Kung Fu students of the new millennium will end common affairs (with a hell of a roundhouse), some will become police officers, and the percentile relegated to rent-a cop.
But in all eyes without fear, their hope is that high juvenile, the desire to become the next Jet Li, China "national treasure" who attended a school of Kung Fu training from age 8 and became a champion five times and Wushu of sensation screen.
But real life in a Kung Fu school as glamorous as its on-screen personification?
Wudang Clan
A few kilometers from Shaolin If the placid waters cons of Song Shan reservoir, the 11-year Shuiku martial arts school, with only 200 students, perhaps small in size and reputation of his rival red suited estimable, but daily exercise is virtually the same.
While the rest of the world work operates on a schedule 9-5, life is literally in Shaolin Shuiku backwards, from 5am to 9pm. In the blue light of dawn, the instructors barking wake their respective teams for a mountain race in the brisk morning air as Chinese patriot songs echo into the surrounding mountains.
Stretching, sprinting, fist pumps and other exercises exertion to forge their young bodies into steel take place under the sun rising, the playground dirt, a veritable army of green-uniformed students lined up in training. A quick cafeteria breakfast is followed by two hours of class textbooks necessary, including Chinese, mathematics and English for the form.
Before lunch, then in the evening is the fun stuff – basics, forms, applications and weapons – components of the external (Shaolin) and Wudang, or internal, styles of Kung Fu training. More can be learned in a few rough years, but take a lifetime to perfect.
The forms, which are real fighting techniques with the appearance of a choreography are the most elegant. The styles of animals, eg, strength, speed and psychology, the Tiger external force and a strong attack, the softer Crane style for patience and concentration, and so the animal kingdom.
For the less graceful student, competitive Sanda sparring is more like street fighting balance, where the largest and most brave Don protective gear and launch each other with fists of fury under the corrective eye of their Shifu.
Led not by a wizened Master Po, a cruel Pei Mei or any such mythical elder with long white eyebrows, today Shaolin Shifu (master) are young, burly and surly, some fresh out of Kung Fu school and quick to take a stick of bamboo to the buttocks of their junior trainees.
Young Grashoppa
In the cold black night, the students spent finally retire to their dormitories for a semi-normal albeit brief adolescent reading comics life – watching movies, or, more precious sleep. The boys share a maximum of ten beds per room, which looks, and smell, accordingly.
Conversely, there are only 7 girls Shuiku, although none admitted discomfort around the pubescent testosterone of so many "brothers". With narrow eyes and long, silky black hair, Feng Jing Jing of Shanxi has been a Shaolin student for one year and plans at least four others.
Despite his calm demeanor, the 17 shares novice years vanity tempered with the rest of his classmates, male and female, disdaining an ordinary life teen classrooms and tests. "Kung Fu is much easier than English," said Jing Feng Jing while reducing a sword in the air with a deadly precision.
And the parents who pay for these classes? For them, Kung Fu is a replacement investment in the future of their child. And earlier will begin over the result – they hope.
Cao Xu, 7, who likes to wheel instead of walk, do not seem to mind being away from his mother and father back in Shanghai. Nevertheless, their adult ambitions have obviously been instilled in mind this little grasshopper: "I want to be a hero … and earn lots of money! "
White Lotus
Demonstrated by its strength at the box office in the world West, the Shaolin lifestyle is not only popular with Chinese. 20 Felix Klemisch studied martial arts in his native Germany for four years before board a plane bound for China to continue his affinity for Kung Fu.
And dominating all other students and instructor to the 190 is Shuiku Stephan Beck, a veteran of the foreign school combined with a 9 months between two Shaolin schools (he quit school after the first making him stare into the sun for ten minutes a day "to build [his] Qi"). Also 20 and from Germany, Stephan defies height, gravity and conventions, often training alone while the Chinese students are in group formation.
The two young Europeans confide that communication is a more great obstacle than physical, and were practically forced to learn rudimentary Chinese to understand their trainers. "We had no choice," said Felix blonde in a strong English accent. "It is basic knowledge of Mandarin or get left behind."
Neither is sure what they want to do when they go home and admit the possibility of deriving the way back to Shaolin. In the meantime, shaved Stephan is looking forward away from Song Shan for an upcoming respite in Beijing.
So who will be there first, a climb on the Great Wall? Shopping the silk market? "Find a Chinese friend," he decrees with Shaolin emphasis. "I was at the top of this mountain too long!"
