The Chinese New Year Spectacular is sure to impress
As far as entertainment goes Chinese New Year, New Tang Dynasty Television New Year Chinese Spectacular is a relatively new child on the block, having made his debut three years ago. It can not be described as a variety show, and it is not really a Broadway musical, but it is different from anything else out there.
Before I attended Canadian debut of the spectacular in Vancouver last month, I had an idea of what to expect, because my Chinese friends have talked enthusiasm, the more I read some promotional materials made by NTDTV. What they are trying to do with this exhibition is reviving the true Chinese culture which was destroyed by Chairman Mao and his communist successors.
Good old Mao demolished the temples, ancient manuscripts burned, tortured and killed intellectuals, monks, and anyone else whom he disliked. To add insult to injury, he did everything the world in black pajamas. During his reign, famines and counting all the rest, Mao, directly or indirectly managed to slaughter more people than the two world wars combined.
Today, the Chinese Communist Party uses the Chinese New Year, the largest celebration of the year for the Chinese, as a way to glorify and promote the philosophy of the communist struggle and class struggle. But Chinese Central TV four hours Spring Festival Gala of acrobatics, acts of prestidigitation and comedy sketches is nothing compared to the elegant dramatic representation of the best of the culture of ancient China.
In other words, it is the traditional Chinese culture without communist rhetoric, to be a refreshing change for the Chinese, many of are more aware of what their culture is true, especially those who were born after the Great Cultural Revolution.
It was refreshing for me too, but not why. On the morning of spectacular, I woke up depressed an unusual state for me. I did not even want to go to all, but I am convinced. As I have been absorbed by the unusual music, the myriad of colors, the graceful movements of dancers, I began to feel elated. There was a purity about the show, something flawless and perfect, which made a deep impression on me.
If I have a complaint at all, it would be that there was only one number played by Xiaochun Xi erhuist. The piece she played was so beautiful and haunting that the public was riveted to every second. The erhu is an ancient instrument with two strings that can produce a remarkable range of notes. Apparently Chinese music aligns with nature in that it is based on five elements of metal, wood, water, fire and earth.
The theme of the spectacular is "Myths and Legends", and certain acts based on ancient legends of the time of Buddha, Confucius and Dao-these wise beings from far back in history 5,000 years in China, which teaches compassion, virtue and selflessness. semi-divine culture of China is evident in the performance leaving one with a wonderful sense of justice ….
Then go to the spectacular and offer you a unique experience. If you are unable to attend the live broadcast, simply contact NTDTV and they will send you a video.

Riding in Cars with Boys (Special Edition) $3.98 Riding in Cars with Boys achieves broad appeal as a tearjerker laced with hardscrabble humor. In the crowd-pleasing hands of director Penny Marshall, Beverly Donofrio’s bestselling memoir loses much of its real-life gravity, but its rich humanity remains in abundance, especially since Drew Barrymore plays Donofrio with effortless charm. The movie spans 20 years, from Bev’s pregnancy at 15 in 1963 … |

TCM Archives: Forbidden Hollywood Collection – Volume One (Waterloo Bridge (1931) / Baby Face / Red-Headed Woman) $24.98 Here are three films that couldn’t and wouldn’t have been made at any other time. Contrary to popular belief, the history of Hollywood permissiveness, what filmmakers could “get away with” on screen, is not a steadily rising graph from puritanical early days to the party-hearty present. In the early 1930s, a national mood of shock over the stock market crash and impatience with Prohibition licen… |
