Antiques – Is there really Bones Bone China?
Classically, the development of the porcelain is attributed to Josiah Spode II (1754 – 1827) who introduced it in 1797, but like many stories, porcelain goes back much further than that.
We must first recognize China as the first country to produce porcelain, a prototype or early type of porcelain, circa 1000. About 400 years later, examples of Chinese porcelain arrived in Europe. Therefore, and until the early 18th century, the race was to discover the mystery "secret" of how make porcelain.
The first attempts were recorded in late 16th century Italy, in the city of the Medici decided Florence, where experimental porcelains were obtained by mixing glass powder with clay in an attempt to reproduce the translucency tantalizing examples of Chinese achievements.
More attempts have been made in the late 17th century to Rouen in France until the porcelain finally was performed successfully at Meissen in the early years of the early 18th century. This was known as alleging top or hard-paste porcelain with Chinese characteristics.
For the sovereign prince of Saxony, Augustus, Elector of Saxony and king of Poland, the production of porcelain Meissen Saxony seen soon become "rich state of Saxony. Everyone wanted to china, all those who could afford what was, as This time, porcelain was a rich man, a luxury product.
To keep the secret of "how porcelain is made 'Augustus enacted laws that have led to the death penalty for anyone revealing, or help anyone outside the factory of Meissen "in the mystery of" secret manufacturing china. But, like all the best kept secrets, the mystery and secret escape rival plants across Europe. (Interestingly, Some connoisseurs of the hardest-edged porcelain still claim that the finest porcelain made in Europe, have all been made in the first half of the 18th century!)
Until the mid 18th century, there is no doubt that the finest European porcelains were produced in French factories, such as Saint-Cloud, Chantilly and Mennecy. Many authors have described these porcelains as "delicious" and "Luscious". French factories, some say, peaking with the famous porcelain from Vincennes and Sevres in 1756.
These porcelains were all famous French soft cheese, which is also known as "artificial porcelain" which was produced by adding powdered glass with clay from China, as in the beginning of Florence, the Medici porcelain. Powdered glass was used as a substitute for rock feldspar also called "petuntse. This course fuses silicate under high temperature turn into a kind of natural glass.
However, it is not possible to completely describe the history of the bones of China without first looking development and contribution the bone china.
The first mention of china (1742) was by Thomas Briand, a speaker and member of the prestigious Royal Society. Briand presented a paper on china in society and it is now would have been based on the French formula, Saint-Cloud.
The first English factory to produce bone china to the French was Chelsea, established in 1743. Chelsea, true to French style, glass powder used for produce superb and now, incredibly rare porcelain.
The two partners have established the factory Chelsea Thomas Briand (the same who delivered Thomas Briand conference at the Royal Society) and Charles Gouyn a blacksmith money, both the original French Huguenots, where the connection St. Cloud!
We now come to china bone ash, or better known term, china.
bone china, in fact, is a bone ash remarkable 50%, 25% feldspar and 25% of China's finest clay.
china bone ash was introduced at the London plant Bow with Chelsea following c1750 c1755. The mixture of bone ash produced molding properties and a better greater stability. These factors substantially reduces the loss of furnace, which caused problems for most of the factories of the 18th century.
This is Here we meet Josiah Spode I, who, in 1767, after an apprenticeship of seven years and a number of other partnerships, has opened its own factory. His son, Josiah Spode II, now have inherited his father's factory, is attributed by the refinement and perfection of china. (The Spode factory is still on same site and holds the title of "the oldest porcelain factory production still standing on its original site).
Spode great contribution was to experiment and discover the porcelain body ideal. In short, he took the standard mix of hard porcelain kaolin and feldspar, based on the Traditional Chinese porcelain and added refined bone ash.
This process completely transformed the ceramic industry and English by the end of the 18th century, with one exception, no porcelain was made in England.
China became a bone is now the standard English porcelain, which was an exclusive product from English. bone ash was rarely used outside England, with U.S. and European manufacturers prefer the hard paste porcelain with Chinese characteristics.
This of bone ash porcelain which gives strength and whiteness, with a remarkable translucency. I am very positive that if Josiah Spode II could see the results of its work today, not only would it surprise, but it would feel a very proud man!
