At Olympia, little masterpieces Art & Antiques Fair International
The International Art and Antiques Fair takes place each year at the Olympia Exhibition Hall, Kensington, west London. I watched, as I do every year, excited, hoping find some small treasure. My interest is Chinese art and antiques, which I bought and sold, and collected more than thirty years. I try to visit most art fairs and antiques in the United Kingdom and some in Europe and the United States each year.
On a of view of Chinese art Olympia was a disappointment for me. Although I saw some interesting pieces, I would have loved to buy things were too expensive or restored. I was resigned to leaving empty handed. Not only empty-handed, disappointed, because I did not was really excited by what I saw and I had walked miles. Exhausted I headed for a coffee stand.
Impossible to find a seat in the cafe, I sat on a long bench opposite a stand selling silver. Even if I sometimes buy money China to sell, I've never been interested in collecting money, always being too bright and too require attention to prevent this way. I rarely watch stands merchants money, but as I sip my coffee, I look at the objects this dealer was selling and was soon realized that many of them were much more than just money. Gold, silver goblets, tankards and mugs covered that looked like pineapples mingled with religious objects: a golden monstrance, a rock crystal cross and various reliquaries. None of these objects were people common and they were all in the eighteenth century or earlier.
The man selling these items lifted various parts of the cabinets, cheerfully, giving information in excellent English with an accent that I do not know. I looked at the name above the stand: Peter Szuhay – B59.
Someone asked the price of a nice cup rhino-horn a gilded silver feet. I know nothing about the works of rhinoceros horn-European art, so when potential buyer left and I had finished my coffee, I asked Mr. Szuhay if he wanted to show me.
We chatted about the cut, now established between us over a glass case filled with jewelry and I discovered that Mr. Szuhay is Hungarian, has lived in London for over thirty years and has a permanent obstacle in Grays Antique Market Davies Street, West End, near Bond Street underground station. He is a recognized expert on money Continental and works of art. He showed me various beautiful pieces early silver, mentioning the famous towns of Augsburg and Nuremberg, which, even a Chinese art dealer has heard. It also has an interest in money later and he showed me some 19th century Russian silver and a magnificent 20th century silver fish from the master server Scandinavian silversmith Georg Jensen.
I noticed that what I had initially dismissed as jewels in the window under the cut, was actually an array of beautifully carved stone cameos and intaglio. I'm used to seeing shells carved into portraits, mounted in brooches, usually from Italy and dating from the middle nineteenth century until recently, but these pieces were something very different and very exciting.
Now we were in first name terms and Peter showed me a selection of carved stones, dating from the late nineteenth century in Rome in the third century era. Exquisite, tiny works of art, some signed by master carvers sixteenth century. We were interrupted and while Peter sold a Chinese silver box, which I had not even noticed was there and I went to the other side of the booth, where he had a showcase of jewelry seconds.
Here he was displaying, what appeared to be a group of more ordinary gold signet rings. But when he returned talk to me again, Peter put me right. They were actually English Medieval rings of gold and silver. Some were signet others were guild rings or rings iconography, worn by pilgrims and etched with icons of Saint Christopher etc. There were sixteenth and seventeenth century Posy rings: Most gold bands bearing sentiments etched around the smooth inside of the ring, in Olde English. It was an area of collecting I had never considered. I've never had much interest in jewelry, decorative objects, jewelry, but Peter was much more than that – it was sculpture, design and graphics and everything has a story and a story attached. These leaders were a little revelation for me.
I did not buy anything from Peter Szuhay in Olympia, but it made my day and it gave me something write. I did however promise to visit his shop in Grays Antique Market and I go, and I'm sure I'll buy something from him soon. Peter also offers a selection of his actions: http://peterszuhay.co.uk.
