A tribute to the Ukiyo-e Master Koryusai undervalued

Introduction

Isoda Koryusai (c.1735-90) originally A samurai became, after the death of his master, the lord of Tsuchiya, a so called Rônin (a knight without a lord) and a "variable man. Most of these "floating people" ended up in low water, but Koryusai chosen to be a painter and illustrator woodcuts. At first it was probably a pupil of Nishimura Shigenaga (1697-1756), but his friend and ukiyo-e master Harunobu (c.1725-1770) had the greatest influence on his work. It was Harunobu who gave fire (Pseudonym) Koryusai, whose real name Masakatsu, which he himself had once used in the past. The respect and admiration for his master was so great that Koryusai developed his own style is Harunobu that died. It stuck in various print sizes and types of Ukiyo-e in particular in the print format and pillar shunga (erotic) kind will be treated in the following paragraphs.

Pillar Print

Koryusai achieved remarkable results in the long and narrow format printing pillar (hashira-e) using a unique style of the wealthy, and rich color and decorative products for the reintroduction of the use of opaque orange (tan) which had characterized the labor illuminations the past. He also used the vertical size of this format to give the appearance of a hanging scroll (kakemono) acquisition some stratification. As in the classical Japanese landscape painting the eyes of the viewer from beginning to the bottom of the image leading the eye to the middle part, then the upper depiciting the background. In general hashira-e are rare because at the time they were attached to wooden columns in the context of Japanese domestic, and therefore more susceptible to damage. But because of the substantial amount of the terminal prints Koryusai designed in this format many of his drawings have survived.

Erotic work

"In color and line to create the total atmosphere of physical love, the best color erotic prints Koryusai are unmatched in Japanese art, which explains in particular the high esteem in which he is held among connoisseurs – To some people have always pursued the cult of erotic art as assiduously as the Japanese. (Richard Lane)

In During Harunobu and Koryusai period of government censorship activity was fairly loose, giving them the opportunity to experiment in the genre of shunga. Sometimes they have signed their designs often positioning within the context of a sliding door or screen. Early work Koryusai resembles that of Harunobu, but he gradually developed his own style using vibrant color characteristics (the famous orange!), Expressing vitality and multicolored figures representing more realistic. Wood artists first worked in the format chuban (approximately 265 x 195 mm) until Koryusai introduced Oban large format (approximately 390 x 265 mm) in the color printing multi-media to create two sets masterpiece called sensual colors, a Phoenix Released in the field and holds twelve of Love ", which have been published in ca.1775. In the format chuban his famous series is the most "prosperous Flowers of the elegant twelve seasons (ca.1773) representative of romance for all twelve months.

Conclusion

If one examines the literature on the history of Ukiyo-e and in particular the artist Koryusai we realize the general consensus among critics on his excellent craftsmanship, originality and pioneer in the Japanese art. With the global recognition of his genius to the question of why it is so undervalued until now becomes more explicit. Probably one of the reasons was the modest Koryusai personality and loyalty to his master and friend of Harunobu even sign his name. Jack Hillier raised an interesting theory in his book "The Japanese print – A new approach" when he chooses:

"There is always, especially among collectors, a tendency to make comparisons between the artist and the artist, and with Koryusai perhaps a case of us expect before and after and pine for what is not. "
