Your indeed that we no longer import goods production from Mexico and Canada than we export. This is because they a comparative advantage in production of manufactured goods. Production costs (labor, capital, regulations) are cheaper in both countries compared to USA. It would be better for the American consumer, if these items were made here, because the costs of production would be in the model pricing of goods produced. higher labor costs, more regulations, higher costs of capital would bring the prices up. The additional cost is really a waste whereas U.S. consumers realize savings are reallocated to higher average effective. In addition, the standard of living in Canada and Mexico fall that Americans have stopped importing their products. This would reduce exports U.S. exports to Canada and Mexico below current levels and cost us more jobs. Free Trade Agreements are in place for the long term.
