I love touring Italy – Friuli-Venezia Giuli Region

If you want a European tourist destination, you should really consider the Friuli-Venezia Giuli of northeastern Italy, bordering Austria and Slovenia. For simplicity, we abbreviate the full name of the region of Friuli. Depending on your interests, Friuli may be an ideal vacation spot. You can get classic Italian food and other specialties, and wash with local wine. While Friuli is not exactly unknown to the tourists you usually will not fight against the crowds to see what you want. Like most regions of Italy, he belonged to many countries over the years. Unlike most regions Italy, it is multicultural, a unique mixture of Italian, Austrian and Slavic influences. This article explores Friuli except its capital and largest city, Trieste, which is discussed in a companion article.

We'll start our tour of Friuli Redipuglia about twenty-five miles (thirty-five kilometers) northwest of Trieste. Then we head north-east of the city of Gorizia almost along the Slovenian border. Then we proceed to the north of Cividale Friuli. We turn left (west) and finish our tour in Udine.

memory of Italy over the war, the military Redipuglia Memorial built during the reign of Mussolini, is located inland from the Gulf of Trieste. Here lie the remains of nearly forty thousand known and more than sixty thousand soldiers unknown Italian the First World War A little further west are the remains of more than fourteen thousand soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian WWI

Gorizia population about twenty-five thousand, is fairly close to the Slovenian border. In fact, one of its suburbs, Nova Gorica, Slovenia is in reality. The Transalpina Railway Square that has fueled the port of Trieste is actually in the two countries. The proximity Sacrario Militare (Military Shrine) of Oslavia, is the burial place over fifty seven thousand soldiers of the First World War

old town of Gorizia is known as Borgo Castello in honor of the medieval castle sixth century surrounded by walls. He has a collection of art of Venice. You can also see the fourteenth century Gothic church of San Spirito the seventeenth eighteenth century baroque church of San Ignazio, the Sixteenth century Duomo (cathedral) and its frescoes, and the eighteenth century baroque Palazzo Attems.

The city has several palaces which the sixteenth century Coronini Cronberg filled eighteenth century Venetian painted furniture, oriental rugs, porcelain, Japanese prints and sketches of the money from Russia, and sixteenth to twentieth century paintings. There is a beautiful library with more than ten thousand volumes of manuscripts and old books.

Cividale del Friuli, about eleven thousand people, was founded by Julius Caesar a little over two thousand years previously. Its historic center is dominated by the Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square) houses the National Archaeological Museum. Nearby the sixteenth century Palazzo dei Veneti provveditori. Be sure to see the tomb Celtic, a series of underground rooms carved in the ancient rock historians do not know if it was a monument or a Roman Celtic (Lombard) jail.

The fifteenth century Venetian Gothic Duomo (cathedral) was built on the ruins of an eighth century building. The Christian Museum next door houses the relics eighth century art and outstanding examples of Lombard sculpture. The fifteenth century Ponte del Diavolo (Devil's Bridge) leads to the church of S. Martino which contains an altar eighth century. The small church Oratorio di Santa Maria (Saint Mary's Oratorio) in the old part of town near Lombard Valle, near the river Natisone, is an outstanding example of the eighth century in the Middle Ages, the art above. Saturday is market day in downtown Gorzia as he was at the time of Julius Caesar.

Udine, a little less than one hundred thousand population, is relatively Recent City based only thousand years ago. Unlike in Trieste, the largest city in the region, Udine belonged to the United Republic of Italy almost since its inception. The XV century Piazza della Libert? Freedom Square) seems well in the Venetian style with its Palazzo del Commune (now city hall) in front of Torre dell'Orologio (Clock Tower). The site also has a beautiful fountain in the sixteenth century, seventeenth century columns showing the Statue of Justice and the Lion of Venice, and the statues of Hercules and peace.

Udine is home to several churches to visit. Fourteen Century Gothic Cathedral includes a fifteenth century bell tower remains unfinished. The Cathedral and Oratory Purite side? Purity Oratorio) contains works beautiful art. The Lombard St. Mary of the Castle is probably the oldest church in Udine and was largely rebuilt after an earthquake near five hundred years ago. Be sure to see its frescos.

Udine major attraction is its castle, situated on a hill. Legend Local Attila the Hun was built there to watch the neighboring Roman city of Aquileia as burned. Twice the castle was destroyed by the tremors land. The Venetians rebuilt it without the fortress, but with a Renaissance palace that now houses the Municipal Museum, the Archaeological Museum, and art galleries and historical. Enjoy views of the mountains and plains of Slovenian Italian walls leading to the castle entrance.

What about food? Prosciutto di San Daniele ham is the pride of Friuli. It ranks just after Prosciutto di Parma ham as the best of Italy. Production is concentrated in the town of San Daniele once paid his taxes in the ham. In fact, this region has been known for the ham before the Romans. But the large-scale production has begun a century ago. San Daniele now sells over two million hams a year. These hams are milder and sweeter the competition. They are low in cholesterol, rich in protein and rich in minerals, especially iron, zinc and vitamin B. Suggested wines to accompany including Tocai Friulano and Ramandolo.

Let's Suggest a sample menu, among others. Start Gulasch di Pesce (Fish Goulash). Then try Arrosto Capriolo al di Pino (roast venison with pine needles). For dessert, treat yourself Presniz (Pastry rum, fruit and nuts.) Sure to increase your dining pleasure by including local wines with your meal.

We'll conclude with a look on the wine of Friuli. Friuli ranked 14th among 20 regions Italian for acres planted in wine grapes and 13 for the total wine production. Approximately 48% of its production of red or ros? Only a few ros? departure 52% white. The region produces a total of 9 DOC wines. DOC means Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which can be translated as Denomination of Controlled Origin, without definitely a high quality wine and a wine DOCG white dessert, Ramandolo. The G stands garantita DOCG, but it is actually no guarantee that such wines are truly superior. More 60% of Friuli wine carries the DOC or DOCG designation is the second largest percentage of all Italy.

Ramandolo is a DOCG wine sweet white wine produced in the area north of Udine at least 90% of local Verduzzo grapes. The vineyards are high in the sky and the slopes are so steep that the grapes must be processed and harvested by hand. DOC Collio, DOC Collio Goriziano also called, is an appellation of Eastern Friuli near the border Slovenia, which includes many high quality wines. The term includes a variety of styles and grapes.
