A foreign image depicted by a writer is often multi-faceted, complicated and even contradictory. On the one hand, Maugham’s images of China are fraught with elegant and archaic antiques, beautiful scenery, great philosophy and glory ancient civilization. On the other hand, they are also negative in many occasions. As a Westerner from the Great Britain, he couldn’t get rid of his pride and prejudice deeply rooted in his heart when viewing China under British oppression and domination during the early 20th century. Like many other Westerners, he belittled China and expressed his doubt and depreciation about China. Thus, it is many a time described as poor, backward, filthy and epidemic-plagued and most Chinese people as disgusting opium smokers. As a matter of fact, the negative images of China are a mixture of facts, imagination bias and misreading. Through the negative images, we can see his pride and prejudice as a Westerner.
