Po Lin Monastery: Home to the largest bronze statue of Buddha in the World
Crowning the Ngong Ping plateau in the picturesque island of Lantau, Po Lin Monastery is a magnetic attraction to both Buddhists and non-Buddhists in Hong Kong tourists. Originally named Da Maopeng, the monastery was built as a small rural church in 1924. With the passage of time the Po Lin Monastery developed into a main center of religious and cultural significance in Hong Kong. The breathtaking beauty of the countryside has also contributed to the fame of the sacred shrine.
The highlight of Po Lin Monastery is probably the Tian Tan Big Buddha statue that has graced the top of the mountain Muyu since 1993. The statue is 34m tall Buddha sitting meditation representative posture on a lotus is the world's largest bronze statue of Buddha. Forged in China within 10 years, the statue represents the majestic dignity and depth character of Sakyamuni. The tilting his head slightly and raised his hand showing the Buddha provide a universal blessing. The statue is placed on a pedestal which is composed of a three-story museum. Among the most notable exhibits are several statues of Buddha and Bodhisattva, and the great bell, decorated engravings of Buddhist scriptures and Buddha images. The monastery has several prayer halls and exhibitions. Xiong Bao Dian (Great Hall of the Treasury), Temple of the Ti-tsang Bodhisattva and Sutra Hall-Collection are among the main sections of the holy premises. In addition, Po Lin Monastery holds regular exhibitions of Buddhist relics for the benefit pilgrims and the general public.
