why does everyone seem to be focused on how old an art is?
wouldn’t a newer art have more innovation a build on what has gone before? it seems that many people seem to think that innovation could only dilute an art. isn’t this kind of a silly position to hold, I mean we know infinitely more about kinesiology today then some monks knew 2000 years ago- they thought drinking jade could make someone immortal for Buddha’s sake.
we don’t study many chemists, or astronomers from that era; why are martial arts different?
Because most people have bought into the fallacy that if something is old it must be good to have survived the test of time. They do not understand that it is not the age of a style, but how much innovation or improvements have been made to it. A style that is static is dead.
And just as you stated, we do have more scientific knowledge and methods to measure and quantify to improve and advance a martial art. It may interest you to know that the traditional Chinese medical “science” is full of errors and inaccuracies. For example, before the introduction of Western medical science, the Chinese believed that the liver was responsible for blood circulation. And because it was taboo in Chinese religion to dissect a corpse, the Chinese had almost no knowledge of human anatomy.
From my perspective, the here and now is the Golden Age of martial art.
