All Japanese lacquer and exquisite Sprinkled Pictures
Before describing these unique and beautiful works of art, exclusively Japanese, I think you Need to know more lacquer, extraordinary medium was used. Only then will you fully appreciate these creations brilliant.
For readers unfamiliar with the old Japanese lacquer, I suspect you think of the typical modern lacquer trays and bowls that are produced mass. These items are very decorative, but completely fail to compare with the magnificent hand made earlier works.
China Japan
The paint is really the sap of a tree called Rhus Vernicifera. The Chinese were the first to discover and use, at least a century before Christ, when it was used as a painting, and more often used as a preservative. It was a very effective preservative, many parts still exist as far as the Han period 206BC, when lacquer was very popular and intensive use.
Most oldest known Japanese lacquer dates back to around the 7th century, but it was not until the 14th and 15th centuries the Japanese lacquer works became much more decorative. By then, they had refined and created exceptional techniques, far finer and more beautiful than the Chinese lacquer they had simply originally copied.
The Chinese have used shades of black, brown, yellow, green and mostly red or cinnabar lacquer. They mainly promoted carving deep lacquer, to form the decoration, and produced a remarkable job.
They are often used colors in layers, so that Once cut, these colors would be revealed. A special technique is known as "Guri lacquer" red and black were the most constructed in layers, then a geometric or symmetrical pattern would be carved with a deep "V-shaped cut, so that all these layers alternating would be revealed in sections. The Chinese also painted, engraved and inlaid with lacquer pieces of iridescent shell, but such efforts have been appreciated by Japanese often more so, than the Chinese.
To begin with all these methods have been copied, but by the 15th century was the Japanese now, rightly, the undisputed masters of art!
Lacquer has been, rightly, highly valued for its enduring qualities and strength. A very high gloss could be achieved, proving impervious to alcohol, acids and hot liquids. It would also appeal to the ideals of Zen Buddhism "Yin and Yang as the lacquer seems to be so delicately beautiful and light. Yet it is difficult, waterproof and durable.
Preparation
It is a very difficult to work with, without compromise, sticky, and a lot of time. He had to be stretched remove any impurities, and heated gently to thicken, and evaporate any moisture. All the time he has been kept in an environment without dust, and added to these difficulties in its liquid form, it gives a toxic gas! Strangely, it requires a humid atmosphere and moist it hardens.
It had to be applied in very thin layers, otherwise it works and if it is too thick, will not harden at all but only under form a skin. After each layer has hardened, all the time in an area free of dust, it has been carefully sanded before another layer is added.
An average piece consisted of a minimum of 30 layers, so that there would be no trace of the wood base, or on larger pieces of hemp cloth applied in the early layers, to help strengthen the wood. The lacquer artist would have taken over, only at this stage to create decorating by adding more layers.
The number of possible colors, due to chemical reactions with the composition of pigments and lacquer have been limited. Thus, the lacquer artists were still limited and the blue color is very rare.
These are the Japanese who developed the idea and techniques of adding gold and silver to complement the decor. Real metals gold and silver were used in the form sheets, flakes, metal particles of different qualities, as well as powders. All these precious metals have been successfully used advantage, particularly in the late 18th and early 19th century.
The sprinkling of gold or silver metal particles were used before and during a long period, to brighten the interiors. Even very early works have lacquer Indoor Nashiji. This is where fine particles of gold have just been sprayed in the paint. Some were scattered unevenly, producing cloud effects, while others varied in density. However, none of the images were trained.
Sprinkled, Not Painted!
The 18th century, they have invented and refined the idea of scattered photos, and they have been used to good effect in what is called "documentary Togadashi. They are easily identifiable, like the surface of the lacquer is always perfectly smooth in the work Togadashi.
These drawings and photos surprising were created only by skilfully make various grades of fine metal and pigment powder on the wet paint, so they sink in. There was no way to correct the errors! additional layers of background color, usually black, would be added to the image. Then thoroughly clean until the picture reappears, the upper edges of the metal particles would be made to shine from the Polish providing brilliance impossible to achieve otherwise. The latter would be very thin coats of clear varnish purest, providing the mirror like finish gloss.
Different shades of black were created by coal mixed with different amounts of silver powder strokes so that they can even simulate painted. These powders have been used mainly for images in black on a gold background, it is inconceivable that were created by watering techniques. What is also quite remarkable is the degree of fine control shade they were able to achieve. This means that much more sophisticated pictures could be created that had never been seen before.
There are three types of techniques interspersed with photos and everything Togadashi, already described, is my favorite! Another is "hiramakie, which is where quite a thick sprinkling of gold powder is used, and the lacquer is raised a little above the bottom. As usual, the surface is polished and burnished, before the final clear layers, and has a very rich appearance. Finally, it is "Takamaka", which is like unto hiramakie only it is raised much higher. This thickness has been achieved by the constitution and modeling of the required areas in relief with a combination lacquer and charcoal, before applying layers of gold dust.
Highlights of pure gold
Many artists paint is use a combination of these techniques in a piece of work. Just to further enrich these images, finely shaped pieces of pure gold, so small that is difficult to imagine how they were handled, shall be applied near the final surface to create highlights. Often, these forms correspond Rather, small squares or diamond pieces that are all so amazingly very accurately placed.
Boxes Togadashi
One of our best examples of this type of work in this collection is a fine area that appears as two overlapping boxes. It shows the figure of the blacksmith forges the sword "Little Fox, Fox assisted by the Spirit as a woman, the other has an overall design of a mass of gold and colored flowers.
Looking closely at the centers of the gold flowers can see how they are made of a number of very small flakes shaped gold, each flake has been carefully placed by hand.
It has also set up a wonderful solid gold plate Togadashi three foxes running in a landscape with a dream really quality. The shelf edge is decorated in `Gyobu, which is where each special sparkle of gold has also been placed by hand, rather than sprinkled.
Another beautiful box that is purely Togadashi fine, depicts a busy street market, and what I can say other than it's a great job!
None of these boxes is signed, but they are nevertheless of the highest quality. To see the photos please use the link at the end of this article. These wonderful works lacquers appear on Japanese inro too (the subject of another article).
Modern Works
A word of warning when buying lacquer, it is important that the condition is both good and original. As there are now some cleverly repaired pieces on the market, expert advice should always be obtained.
Fine lacquer is still, and there are some artists Lacquer traditional life which are held in very high esteem in Japan. Both from then, that some have been designated "Living National Treasures," and their hand contemporary lacquer work is in high demand and very expensive.
I saw example, a weekend study lacquer place at the V & A Museum. A box that combines remarkable modern thick Perspex clear lacquer with black in a geometric design that was very dramatic. Personally I still prefer the earlier work and the cost of This modern box a beautiful collection could be formed!
