How to get my horse to run?
I dont know if she is to you but she will be 3 April 22 and i have got her started on barrel racing but all i can get her to do is lope around the barrels and i would like her to run them she is almost 15hh and she is a paint appy Please help any suggestion becasue i dont really like spurs but i will use a lil whip if needed
No more barrel racing for now, PLEASE! I don’t mean this in a rude way, but please read all of this and consider it.
A horse should only start light riding at 2 years old, not barrel racing! Your horse shouldn’t start loping until at least 3, and PLEASE no galloping (especially around tight turns!) until she’s much more matured. (4 and a half at the absolute youngest.) At this stage her joints aren’t ready to take the pounding of running (even loping) around barrels and her muscles just aren’t strong enough to balance around those turns. A 3 year old horse is not developed enough to balance like that, and the type of riding you’re doing with her at this age will cause soundness issues down the road. It’s not that she’s not doing what you ask; it’s just that she physically can’t. No need for spurs or a whip! Back off from the barrels for a while and do light riding on mainly straight lines and wide turns (NO tight turns!). Work her lots at the walk and trot, and once she’s more balanced there you can begin lope work. I would also suggest doing some trail riding and calm work with her while she’s young. She’s got plenty of years ahead of her, so please don’t rush her training. If you aren’t able to wait at least an other year and half to begin barrel work, then you may want to think about getting an older, more matured horse. I am not trying to offend you or criticize your judgment or knowledge, but for you’re mare’s sake please take this advice.
