Exploring Picturesque Sha Tin District In Breathtaking Hong Kong
Ideally located, the district of Sha Tin is one of Hong Kong’s most popular tourist venues by no coincidence. Home to the countries most illustrious and modern museum, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and one of its largest equestrian racecourses, this charming quarter of the island nation also lays claim to some of its most renowned attractions.
One such highlight is of course the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery which is situated in Pai Tau Village, Sha Tin. Spread out over eight hectares, this majestic place of worship was completed in the late 1950′s. Consisting of a low level and a top deck building, the most interesting aspect of this monastery is its pagoda and pavilions. The great hall and the tower in the lower level are also worth exploring while the upper deck of the structure comprises of four halls that are equally impressive. Another religious point of interest nearby is the Che Kung Temple which has earned its place as a Grade II historic structure. Having been maintained by the villagers for over three centuries this idyllic temple was originally built to honour the Song Dynasty general of the same name.
Known as one of the finest examples of Hakka walled villages in Hong Kong, the Big House of the Tsang or Shan Ha Wai is also a must -see when in Sha Tin. Built as far back as 1848, this former home of granite pioneer Tsang Koon-Man took two decades to see completion. Constructed in fine granite, stealthy timber and bricks, this well-preserved “Walled Village at the Mountain’s Foot” is a sight that warrants awe and admiration. The historic Tao Fong Shan Christian Centre is another architectural gem in Sha Tin while nature lovers should head down to the Mai Po Wetland which plays host to 55,000 migratory birds. Birdwatchers also will be happy to see one of the world’s Black-faced Spoonbill populace in addition to Saunders’ Gulls in the venue.
The Hong Kong Science Park in Sha Tin is an enjoyable excursion to the entire family with its lakeside garden, amphitheatre and promenade. The 22 hectare property also encompasses a food court and 20 high-tech buildings while the Chinese University of Hong Kong is home to an art museum, Sculpture Garden, Cultural Square and the scenic Weiyuan Lake.
