Will someone give me a serious critique on my poetry?
Red Handed
I’m caught red handed and time stands still
This carcass below me is fresh from the kill
My hands drip freedom as the pigs draw gun
These men in blue have ruined all my fun
Fifteen cases of souls gone free
Fifteen people who all met me
This hint of copper which fills the suite
The giver of life, the scent of deceit
What else can I know; this is all I’ve done
This roller coaster ride has just begun
They want me alive, but they just don’t know
Through this broken window is how we start the show
My farewell is a howl of guns as I make the dive
My blood is pumping; heart is racing, though I won’t survive
Out in the light I can see the amber rays of sun
I sigh in discontent my life is finally done
I find my self enjoying poetry like this, especially because of the fact the speaker dies in the end causing the reader to understand it as fiction (now matter if any of it is true or not, dead people don’t write, so that removes any connection one can make between the author and the speaker), and that makes this gruesome tale have a happy ending.
My critique would be to try for a pentameter (as suggested above) and in doing so edit out unnecessary words (as suggested above). The two lines that work the least, in my opinion, were L3&4 in S3. Especially that last line of the stanza. The voice seems all wrong compared to the rest–seems forced in order to make the rhyme.
