Eclectic Spirituality at Temple Kek Lok Si
Kek Lok Si Temple is known for being one of the most beautiful Buddhist temple not only to the island Penang, but in the South-East Asia. Standing atop Ayer Hill on the outskirts of Georgetown, the temple is an architectural beauty, built in tiers and garnished with fresh colors and designs. The temple is known to be the largest in Malaysia, which continues to grow.
Construction Kek Lok Si Temple, in 1893, was conducted under the direction of the chief priest of the Goddess of Mercy Temple. However, the seven-story pagoda, which it comes to many as the Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas, was completed in 1930, built to reflect Chinese Thai and Burmese architectural styles. This wonderful structure symbolizes devotion to both the Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism. The surrounding gardens, ponds and eclectic sculptures have been built enamoring on the space of twenty years, delicate in design and art.
Arriving at the foot of the hill Ayer, visitors and pilgrims will first encounter with the former prayer hall, which is home to thousands of miniature Buddha structures embedded in niches in the wall itself. Reaching the room, the sunken garden with its bandstand and ongoing prayer room is in sight. In the prayer hall, visitors will find intricate carvings on walls, pillars and ceilings. The pagoda is in the scope of the prayer hall, and the pilgrims must go beyond it to get to the destination. Walk in the pagoda, taken in different styles and decor lining the walls of the temple showing the different steps and references to the life of Buddha.
Admission to this wonderful attraction is made available to the public free of charge, where prayers and spiritual acts are allowed in the peace and serenity. For those who want a pilgrimage to view the Kuan Yin statue is allowed to take a ride on the elevator, which is available with costs RM 2.
