I’ve taken the ASVAB (98AFQT) Taken the DLAB (Scored 109) and I had a few questions about the rate.
I’ve found two lists of languages I qualify for based on scores, one had the upper tier languages at 105 (Korean, Chinese and Arabic) Another had it at 110.
-So how does language choice work?
-How does liberty work in the crytpo field?
-What are the chances of getting a language I want?
-And finally, what’s the training/school life like?
I can only answer your last question – the DLI is a very tuff school – but you did well on the DLAB and scored in the highest category and so you could get any language. Classes are 8 hours a day + 2-3 hours of homework every night. the shortest time is 6 months (spanish) the longest is 63 weeks – korean – they might be increasing that though (it is that hardest program -English is the only cat 5 language and they have been thinking of making Korean a cat 5 as well). If you get a C on one part of your test (they are 3 part tests) they will put you on extra study in addition to what you already are doing, if you are on extra study twice in a row, there is a chance that you can roll back to another class or they will rock you out – it is up to your teachers and CO – alot depends on your attitute and the effort you put in. If you get a “lack of effort” that will mar the rest of your military carreer – I would not recomend that. You will have emersion days at the emersion facility. Depending on the language, you can have some field trips. Some languages have the oportunity to go to that county a the end of their studies for a month – I have heard that it is not good to do that because you learn more slang than what is on the DLTP and it has messed a lot of people up.If you are at the DLI over a year they will give you a 10 day class break that you can use your leave for. I don’t know about Navy, but I know that Army and Air Force are given their language, National Guard gets to pick their language based upon DLAB scores. The DLPT (the test you take at the end) is pretty tuff – it takes a month just to prep for it. you have to take it every year. Army gets full accesss on line to Rosetta stone for any language – I don’t think that the other branches do, but you can check it out of the library on the Presideo. You will still have to stay in shape (DLI is famous for people getting fat) – I don’t know how strict Navy is, but Army is pretty strict and if you don’t make PT scores you will also get rocked out. Don’t know where Navy goes to crypto school. You will live in the barracks at the Presideo, unless you are married, then you will live in the Ord military housing. Good luck, you will have to tlive the life of a nerd when you get to the DLI – it is pretty hard
