whats the meaning behind chinese jade? does it have any superstitions or meanings? why do so many asain women and men wear jade?
im not asking where i can buy jade. i just want to know if it has any meaning behind it. what does jade represent?
“Jade” often refers to the gemstone Jadeite Jade, a green member of the pyroxene mineral group. However, what was called jade and had been used in China for over 5000 years is actually Nephrite Jade, a member of the amphibole group of minerals.
Nephrite Jade has special significance to the Chinese. Consider what Confucious wrote 2400 years ago about it:
——— If Jade is highly valued, it is because, since ancient times the wise have likened it to virtue. Its polish and brilliancy represent the whole of purity; its perfect compactness and extreme hardness represent the sureness of the intelligence; its angles, which do not cut, although they seem sharp, represent justice; the pure and prolonged sound which it gives forth when one strikes it represents music.
Its color represents loyalty; its interior flaws, always showing themselves through transparency, call to mind sincerity; its iridescent brightness represents heaven; its admirable substance, born of mountain and of water, represents the earth. Used alone without ornamentation it represents chastity. The price which all the world attaches to it represents the truth. To support these comparisons, the Book of Verse says: “When I think of a wise man, his merits appear to be like jade.” That is why the wise set so great store by jade. ———
I know that’s a pretty long paragraph, but it really only shows how revered Nephrite Jade is. It’s not just a gemstone. It is the “stone of heaven”! It represents all things good and perfect!
Why is Jadeite Jade not considered the true “stone of heaven”? Simply because it was only recently (17-18th C) made popular in China and also because it cannot withstand high heat. Jadeite melts into a glassy slag, ut Nephrite takes on an aged appearance.
Chinese like to wear it because it is thought to bring good luck and protect the wearer from harm. This has to do partly with what is carved on the jade s well. Different symbols mean different things. For e.g. bamboo represents durability and plenty, a stork means long-life and wisdom, five bats means prosperity, a vase means peace etc… Wearing a piece of jade carved with auspicious symbols is believed to bring you luck! And why not? It’s kind of like “thinking positive” isn’t it?
