Brighten up your garden pergolas

Pergolas are a shady, garden structure whose beginnings date back to ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, and have common features in early Renaissance gardens throughout Europe. Their main purpose was to provide shade on the sidewalks, terraces, or pools. Earlier versions are often constructed from stone pillars with wooden cross-beams with a roof truss. It was common to see ivy vines or other climbing plants twine around the wood and fill the spaces between the network. Today, they are often constructed from pressure-treated wood or cedar.
