Chinese Antiques

I used to be the Locofoco Surveyor in the Custom-House of the port of Salem. It was a pure sinecure – there was no sea traffic to speak of, and all my fellow workers were old men who mostly slept in their chairs or talked about their dinners and lunches. One rainy day I went to the archives and found an envelope, made of parchment, inside of which there was a commission, under the hand and seal of Governor Shirley, in favour of one Jonathan Pue, several other papers concerning him, a manuscript, history of Salem,written by him, and a piece of embroidery in a fine red cloth. I found a full story of it in the Pue’s manuscript and want to retell it my own way, and publish it. I think that the story is rather interesting. There is love, adultery and many other exiting things. I am thinking about re-writing it as a fiction, not as a real history, as Pue did. I’d like something with a human touch. Should I do it?
