How to start manual transmission cars on a hill?
I don’t understand the concept of hill starting with manual cars. I’ve heard to use a parking break, but everything I’ve read about hill starting involving a parking break doesn’t tell me WHEN to take the parking break off?? Would I do that after I’ve shifted into first?? HELP!
Ok I’ll try to answer your question in few steps as simply as possible:
1. Come to a complete stop
2. Shift into neutral
3. Pull the handbrake up
4. Shift into a first gear
5. With the handbrake on try starting normally as you would’ve if the ground was leveled
6. You will feel (notice) that the car is trying to move, but handbrake is not letting the car go forward (hood will maybe go up, depends on what car you drive)
7. Release the handbrake and the car will start moving with not rolling back (you are not going to hit the car even if the car is 5 inches behind you and you’re driving in San Francisco:) )

P.S. with the practice and experience you will be able to manage to start on a hill without using the e-brake, just a regular brake, just practice (it can be embarrassing but you’ll learn a good lesson)
