How to cope with fear of flying?
I never used to be scared of flying but I am getting more and more anxious about flying not just a 9/11 type incedent but just a plane accident – I am sure Lost didn’t help! I have also started looking up crash statistics which i thought would show how safe flying is – which they do but at the same time show all the gruesome details about crashes.
Anyway does anyone have any tips for feeling a bit stressed when I fly (take offs and landings are the worst bits for me.
Flying as a whole IS safe…focusing on crashes and the details isn’t helping you…
One of the things you have to remember is the press has ALWAYS sensationalized aviation, particularly crashes – there are hundreds of thousands of aviation incidents (emergency landings, etc) everyday that turn out OK – but the press doesn’t report that – only the tragedies…keep that in mind….
If you don’t want to go to the group therapy classes to get over your fear of flying (there are hundreds available), you may want to try and get a private pilot textbook (the library should have some) and read/educate yourself about how an airplane flies – and what happens to the airplane, pilot input, etc. during takeoffs, landings, and at cruise – sometimes knowing how something works overrides the fear and becomes interesting as well as calming because you now know what’s happening and why.
I took several people up in small aircraft who were fearful of flying/got airsick, etc – when they became afraid and/or queezy, I made them fly – worked everytime…takes your brain off the fear/feeling of sick/uneasiness and concentrates it on something else – like flying the airplane – they were always amazed at how “easy” it was and that “they” could do it!!
