What would gold be worth if it was only valued for its industrial uses?
If Gold had no psychological value, if it was just another ductile, highly conductive metal, useful for all sorts of things but not as a form of money, what would it be worth?
Ditto for Silver, Palladium, and Platinum. In other words, what would the precious metals be worth if people perceived them as ugly?
There is no way of knowing the answer to this question since in their nature, the precious metals have value, (all value is “psychological”, is subjective to the human mind) both for their industrial use as commodities and for their use as money.
Indeed, the use of gold as jewelry is in the category of its “industrial” use, as a commodity. But it is its use as this commodity that originally gives rise to its universal acceptability, which in turn gives rise to its use as money.
The distinguishing feature of money, as a commodity, or insofar as it arises from a commodity, is that the commodity is acquired not for the sake of its consumption, like other commodities like bread, but so as to give it away later on in an exchange in which the current buyer knows that it is most likely to be accepted. So instead of producing more oranges than I need and then trying to exchange the oranges for what I want, I exchange the surplus oranges for money, knowing that everyone will accept it.
The thing about gold and precious metals is that, even though one acquires it for purposes of later exchange, i.e. as money, one can wear it as jewelry and show of status in the meantime, and so its industrial and money values are intertwined and cannot be clearly distinguished.
